OR – Helinox Chair

As I passed the Big Agnes’s booth at OR, I caught a glimpse of MultiCam out of the corner of my eye. I stopped and sure enough, I had spied a camp chair in MultiCam. Of course, I thought, “how cool is that?” It would be great for use while deployed. But if that wasn’t great enough, once I visited Mystery Ranch I got to meet with a rep from the Korean manufacturer Helinox. Turns out, Helinox’s sister company makes aluminum poles. In fact, although not Berry compliant, their aluminum poles are the industry standard. But that’s beside the point. I found out that the chair I saw at master distributor Big Agnes is a consumer product.

20130127-164426.jpg

Mystery Ranch will be offering a “cool guy” version of the chair called appropriately enough the Tac Chair. It is going to include a few enhancements and will be offered not only in MultiCam but also Black, Ranger Green and Coyote. For one thing, the small pouch you see at the rear will hold the broken down chair for storage and transport. Additionally, they’ve added a small pocket on the side as well as a full Cordura body for durability.

Here you see the Big Guy himself enjoying a short respite in the TAC Chair.

NEMO Equipment offers a wide variety of shelters that will accommodate users from 1 to 20. Here, you see their Coda 1.5P SE which incorporates dual side openings as well as a vestibule.

For years the US military has issued a canvas tent for use in arctic environments. NEMO Equipment has developed a new shelter called the ISOPOD300X SE for a USMC requirement to replace this older shelter.

20130221-111652.jpg
This slightly smaller ISOPOD100 (above) version is in Orange but its also offered in any of the NEMO SE colors such as Alpha Green, Coyote and MultiCam. This tent will handle a wind load in excess of 80 mph.

From above the ISOPOD300X resembles a cloverleaf. It’s a single wall tent and the Gore-tex fabric is also FR and offers blackout for light suppression. You can turn a light on inside and the tent won’t “glow”. It is under 150 lbs and this shelter will also accept a space heater as well as HVAC units.

They are also currently working on a new version of the US Army’s 10 men Arctic tent designed in 1952. Referred to as an Octopod, it will be a center pole design and fit in an akio.

Over the weekend we were able to share NEMO Equipment’s new catalog for their military line called Shield. Many of you asked if you could place individual orders and we told you ‘very soon’ and boy, we weren’t kidding. They are introducing a fantastic pro deal program at Warrior West this week that is a 30% discount for military, LE, first responders and even retirees.

20130424-065435.jpg

NEMO Equipment, Inc. manufacturer of AirSupported™ and Extreme Conditions tents, sleeping bags, pads and backcountry accessories, has announced the launch of a new website for its Shield™ Edition line of tactical gear. The ecommerce site offers in-depth information on Shield™ shelters, pads & pillows and specialty equipment. Visitors can search by product category or user environment, including Arctic, Mountainous or Desert. Products can also be sorted and searched based on Berry and Trade Compliance.

In 2006, NEMO began adapting its shelter technology for elite US Special Operations Forces and launched its Shield™ product line. NEMO is intensely proud to serve the American Warfighter and allied partners, and aims to design, engineer, and manufacture the best equipment solutions possible.

The Coda 1.5P SE from NEMO Equipment’s Shield line is currently a component of the NSW issue PEPSE (Personal Environmental Protective Survival Equipment) kit.

20130425-215344.jpg

The thing I love about this shelter is its versatility. That 1.5P in the name denotes one man plus his equipment. It features three doors, one on each side and one in front as well two vestibules, a side vestibule and a front vestibule. You take as much shelter as you need along for the haul, whether its just you, or you and your equipment, or you, your buddy and equipment.

20130425-220005.jpg

All three doors feature an additional zipper track that allows vestibules to be attached or removed. An optional Linking Panel connects using the zipper track over the side doors to complex two or more Coda™ tents together, either facing the same direction, or 180 degrees opposed for better security.

20130425-220936.jpg

Available in Coyote but can be camouflaged with the IPF™ (Interchangeable Partial Fly™) in MultiCam.

Tent Topographics – An Innovative Look At Shelters From NEMO Equipment

$

NEMO Equipment has has adopted an innovative way to look at the internal space of tents. First recommended by the Outdoor Industry Alliance’s ASTM committee, it is modeled on topography lines from a map.

20130513-085646.jpg

One of the most difficult things to do is to visualize the vertical space within a shelter since they invariably feature sloped sides. Without actually setting one up and climbing in, you can’t be sure if you’ll have much room to maneuver.

20130513-085733.jpg

With these topographic diagrams, you can visualize the shelter’s maneuver room, just like on a 1:50,000 map. While NEMO Equipment is the first company to incorporate them, hopefully they’ll soon become the industry standard. Look for these diagrams starting now on www.nemoequipment.com.

We just found out that NEMO Equipment is doing a quick 10 day promo; buy a Losi Combat 2P SE and get a FREE Helio Pressure Shower.

The Losi Combat 2P SE is based on NEMO’s top-selling Losi 2P lightweight backpacking tent. Its 2 doors and 2 vestibules offer easy access and generous gear storage for each person. The pole configuration makes for near vertical walls, so when the weather’s bad, 5 people can join you for a round of cards.

20130705-130255.jpg

The Helio Pressure Shower is awesome. Ive been impressed with it simce forst checking it out at Summer OR a couple of years ago. Perfect for backcountry showers, kitchen duty or hosing off gear, Helio requires no hanging. The 11 liter welded fabric water tank is quickly pressurized with NEMO’s foot pump. Just fill with water, let warm in the sun, pressurize and start enjoying the 5-7 minutes of steady water pressure.

Warrior Expo – Thermarest

20130712-093812.jpg

Although the NeoAir has been around for about a year-and-half, I don’t think enough of you know about The newer XTherm. Offering a R value of 5.7 it is the equivalent of stacking a Z-Lite and two standard military inflatable sleeping pads. All that at only 15 oz (430 g). Also, note it is available in four different lengths.

20130712-094130.jpg

One important thing to note on the NeoAir is that it should be placed inside a sleeping bag. This not only increases comfort and insulation but also durability. Since it relies completely on air and a reflective material for insulation, it deflates much more quickly than foam lined pads and can be left inside your bag or bivy and stuffed for transport. The NeoAir does require a little more care than the standard pad but the advantages far outweigh the requirement to look after your kit.

Here you can see it paired with the UltraLite Cot which weighs just under 3 lbs.

Outdoor Retailer – PROFORCE EQUIPMENT

I am sure you are familiar with PROFORCE EQUIPMENT, the exclusive importer of seven brands of clothing and equipment including Snygpak, Multimat and Wildo. You’ve seen their military gear but the big story is that they are expanding civilian color options for their lines.

20130731-093502.jpg

For example, the Wildo line of BPA-free personal campware. Notice the new colors for commercial use.

20130731-093731.jpg

They’ve also introduced some colorful options for the multimat line of sleeping mats. Likewise, the sleeping bags are also available in red, green and blue.

Outdoor Retailer – NEMO Equipment

First and foremost, NEMO has changed the color schemes of their sleeping pads to make them easily identifiable.

20130731-223046.jpg

Next, they’ve introduced new pads. For example, the new Cosmo Lite series. Both models in the line incorporate the Airlock Elite fabric found on the Zor series of pads. And, they utilize a foot pump with a single baffle to save weight and increase compactibility. While the Cosmo Insulated Lite 20R (20 denoting width) includes a layer of PrimaLoft to take you down to 15 deg F, the Cosmo Air Lite 20R is made for slightly warmer temps above freezing and does include the additional insulation.

20130731-223813.jpg

NEMO has also introduced two new tents.

The VEDA series is offered in two models. It relies on hiking poles for support but unlike other models on the market which only use one pole, NEMO presupposes that a hiker will have two poles and have leveraged that to provide better support and more head room. The Veda 1P seen below is a single wall tent but it also incorporates a bug net inside the tent which divides it into living and storage/cooking spaces. It is joined by a two person model which we’ll cover later.

20130731-223856.jpg

This is the Galaxi 2P. It offers a large vestibule and these cool Magtie magnetic door tie-backs. The pole is of a single aluminum, hubbed design.

20130731-223916.jpg

One feature that is kind of interesting is that they’ve incorporated a Velcro strip for name tags unto a commercial tent.

20130731-224010.jpg

Finally, I’d like to mention NEMO’s new Duffel for storing your bags. It also includes a Dopp kit.

20130731-224035.jpg

There are many other new products from NEMO and we’ll start sharing those soon as well.

As always, NEMO Shield, their tactical line, has several new items coming out. Up first is the new Gen 3 FAS AR Jump SE. It is designed to carry an M4, M16, etc.

20130801-105302.jpg

20130801-105322.jpg

It now incorporates an valve to regulate the amount of buoyancy as well as a roll top closure with a water proof closure as a back up. Additionally, NEMO reintroduced the window for the ATPIAL so that the laser can be used while the weapon is still in the bag.

20130801-105510.jpg

The Targa SS SE is a short sleeve mobility bag that can be worn over kit. It allows the wearer full access to any chest mounted equipment which can be accessed via zipper or snaps and the sleeve sections can be closed off via zippers from inside or out. It’s a 40 Deg F stand alone bag but when worn with PCU you can go down to 0 Deg. The Targa features a helmet compatible, insulated hood. Finally, the hem can be pulled up so that the Targa can be worn parka style. Here you can see a Targa in Kryptek Yeti as well as Coyote and MultiCam.

20130801-110029.jpg

The ALCS SE which we have featured before, incorporates a WL Gore black out fabric that won’t “glow in the dark” when you turn on a light.

Now, they’ve introduced an Integrated Camo Cover in Kryptek Yeti. It isn’t a fly but rather just offers the ability to easily change camouflage. Other ICCs include MultiCam and standard Arctic White but they can do virtually anything if the numbers are right.
